James H. Cone (1938-2018) is the acknowledged 'Founding Father' of BlackLiberation Theology. His landmark book 'Black Theology and Black Power' (1969)charted the theological rationale for a Christianity rooted in the belief that'Jesus of Nazareth' was an oppressed Jewish man under Roman Occupation; anidentity that held the key to the development of Black Theology as a Theologyof Liberation. This talk will explore the legacy of James Cone and thecontinued need for Black Theology in the age of Black Lives Matter and themurder of George Floyd.
Professor Anthony Reddie is the author of Introducing James H. Cone: A Personal Exploration (2022) along with numerous other books and publications, director of the Oxford Centre for Religion and Culture, and editor of the academic journal, Black Theology. His research focuses on the interface between Black theology and decolonial/transformative education as a means of conscientization and empowerment.
