How might Pope Leo’s teachings illuminate our current social and political situation? What they mean alongside our lives and experiences? And what is the spirit saying to us amidst all this?
This course takes the form of five opportunities for Conversation in the Spirit: a process for discussion used at the recent Synod on Synodality. Conversation in the Spirit combines prayerful reflection with listening and encounter in order to hear where the Holy Spirit is leading the Church today. Each week, we will use this technique to discuss extracts from Pope Leo’s teachings, focusing particularly on questions of justice.

Week 1
Dr Nicolete Burbach is the Social and Environmental Justice Lead at the London Jesuit Centre. Her PhD thesis looked at Pope Francis’ hermeneutics of uncertainty, and her research focuses on resourcing Pope Francis to think through issues of alienation and disagreement, with a particular focus on navigating the difficulties around trans inclusion in the Church. Previously, she has taught modules on postmodern theology and Catholic Social Teaching, both at Durham University.
