Online Course Details

GK Chesterton was one of the most celebrated public intellectuals of the Edwardian era. A man of many talents, he was a writer of detective fiction, an art historian, a literary critic, a philosopher and a Catholic apologist. The influence of his work is far-reaching and he is credited by figures as diverse as Jorge Luis Borges and Slavoj Zizek as an inspiration. In this one-day session, we shall take a whistle-stop tour of Chesterton's work.

Our study day will provide a crash course in Chesterton’s work: his genius as a prose stylist and the clarity of his philosophical thought. We will consider Chesterton’s work in its original context – in early twentieth century English and European thought – as well as it’s long lasting influence.

The day will be arranged around five informal sessions focussing on different texts:

1.      The Life of GK Chesterton.

2.      Father Brown.

3.      The Man who Was Thursday.

4.      The Everlasting Man.

5.      The legacy of Chesterton’s work.

Please note that readings will be provided to participants in advance of the study day.
