Online Course Details

This courseoffers an opportunity to examine some of the affective states that touch ourlives. We will look at a selection of those feeling states that we experienceas uncomfortable and indeed distressing – shame, grief, loneliness, anxiety anddisgust. These feelings all have a negative valence, and can impact us inpowerful ways, but each have discernible and specific felt qualities whichdistinguish them from one another. Each of these feelings bear differentmeanings and contour our experience of being in the world in particular ways.In this course we will look philosophically at these different feeling states, considering their nature and structure in each case. We will pay particular attentionto how these feelings are ‘shaped’ – spatially, temporally, socially andexistentially, comparing and contrasting these as we go. This short tour hopesto shed light on some of these familiar and difficult companions.
